Color-zoned quartz crystals

In 1997, during a field trip to Mont Saint-Hilaire, Dr. Peter Richards picked up some small samples because they contained a yellow platy material. When they were finally cleaned up recently, the yellow material turned out to be calcite, and rather badly banged up at that. But, as often happens with material from the Magic Mountain, there was an unexpected surprise.

Let's read on and re-discover what the author found...

Statistics

A small section that will be dedicated to various statistics on mineral species from Mont Saint-Hilaire.

The first interesting statistics from the quarry are the distribution of elements amongst all species found at Mont Saint-Hilaire. This periodic table displays the elements found at the site and the number of species with these respective elements.

NOTE: I had to use Java script, I found it to work on IE v3.02 and later and most Netscape versions.

Also, while on the subject, here is the breakdown of the species amongst the different groups of minerals.

Properties

A new section to search on different properties, such as color, diaphaneity, hardness, luster, specific gravity and streak. This is not on site yet. Expect this to be online in the future.

New Space Group Notation

Have a look at this interesting article that treats with the new space group notation system to facilitate use with database on computer-based systems.
