CARACTÉRISTIQUES PHYSIQUES:

Couleur – rouge foncé à noir.
Éclat – vitreux.
Transparence – transparent à opaque.
Système cristallin – monoclinique, Cc
Morphologie – granules incluses dans les cristaux de mangan-neptunite crystals.
Clivage – {110} parfait.
Cassure – conchoïdale.
Dureté – 5 – 6.
Densité – 3,2 g/cm
Trait – blanc.
Associations minérales – mangan-neptunite.
Autres propriétés – aucunes.
Étymologie – nommée en 1893, d’après Neptune, dieu romain de la mer, à cause de sa découverte avec l’aégirine, nommée pour Aegir, dieu scandinave de la mer.
